Improving safety on our construction projects

In 2019, at least two flaggers were struck and seriously injured by reckless and careless drivers on Manitoba road construction projects. Clearly, incidents such as these are unacceptable and more importantly, entirely preventable.  We also know these were not the only serious incidents or near misses during the last construction season. A number of companies have asked us to step up attention to flagger safety and driver awareness.

MHCA WORKSAFELY has asked SAFE Work Manitoba to jointly lead a review to identify measures to improve driver awareness and safe-driving practices at construction sites. Many of these incidents either go unreported or are unaddressed by law enforcement. To better identify the seriousness of the problem, we are asking our member companies to let us know about any similar, recent incidents.

Manitoba Heavy will host a special COR™ meeting at the MHCA office on January 24th to hear your concerns and provide an opportunity to report your experience or past incidents. Your concerns will help shape the outcome of discussions with SAFE Work Manitoba and government as we push for improvements to protect workers and equipment on our road construction sites. If you are interested in attending or if you are unable to attend but would like to bring concerns forward, please email or call Sarah Craig (sarah@mhca.mb.ca). Help make our road construction projects safer for our workers!
