WORKSAFELY™ teleconference sessions highlight concerns in working during pandemic

WORKSAFELY™ recently held 3 one-hour teleconference meetings for heavy construction companies. Over 100 people, in total, took part, discussing concerns and issues in working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Key questions and answers that were discussed are as follows:

1) When a company goes to another province for work, are the workers required to self-isolate for 14 days when returning to Manitoba?

Do companies from other provinces need to self-isolate for 14 days when entering Manitoba for work?

The MHCA has asked the provincial government to confirm that heavy construction workers will be able to move in and out of Manitoba, as an exception to mandatory 14-day self-isolation order imposed as of April 17.

MHCA has asked that a working group be established with individuals from Public Health, Manitoba Infrastructure, MHCA’s WORKSAFELY™ program and Winnipeg Construction Association’s CSAM to define the exemption for construction workers and services.

The MHCA will update members on the application of the order as information becomes available.

2) Most companies are requiring workers and visitors to answer the Health Screening Tool before entering a job site. Does this apply to every visitor that comes on site?

Yes. All visitors and workers must complete a health screening tool, in order to protect workers on the job site based on screening criteria issued by Manitoba Public Health.

3) Employers have right to send workers home if they show sickness. How do you determine this?

WORKSAFELY™ encourages companies to use the COVID-19 Health Screening Tool or to visit Manitoba Health’s Covid-19 Screening Tool at https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/screening-tool/ to determine whether a worker should be sent home to self-isolate.

4) How and where are people getting supplies for hand sanitizer, masks, etc.?

Currently WORKSAFELY™ is sourcing suppliers and will be adding to our website under COVID-19 resources.

WORKSAFELY™ is here for all your needs, so please keep in contact with your advisor or Jackie Jones to keep us informed of what you are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
