Electronic logging devices become mandatory in 2022

BACK TO YOU: DON HURST

We want to remind our companies that effective June 12, 2022, it will be mandatory for drivers subject to provincial regulations (and who are already required to keep a daily log of their driving records) to use an Electronic Logging Device (ELD). Federal regulations requiring ELDs have been in effect since June 2021. ELD’s replace the use of paper log books. These regulations are aimed at preventing fatigue-related accidents involving commercial drivers.

Prior to the June 12, 2022, provincial enforcement officers will be issuing warnings for non-compliance. After this date, drivers will be ticketed if not following regulations.

Both federal and provincial regulations will continue to exempt drivers and vehicles that remain within 160 kms of their home terminal; however, drivers’ daily hours must be tracked.

The following exemptions also apply to carriers and vehicles operating solely in Manitoba:

  • A motor carrier operating under a permit allowing for an exemption;
  • A motor carrier to which there is an existing exemption to hours-of-service requirements;
  • Vehicles that are subject to a lease/rental agreement that is no longer than 30 days; and,
  • A vehicle manufactured prior to the year 2000.
