Make our roads safer, for all

Councillor Janice Lukes (Waverley West), Deputy Mayor, City of Winnipeg presented alongside MLA Robert Loiselle and Dave Kramer, Vice President, SAFE Work Manitoba, hosted by Chris Lorenc, Chair, SAFE Roads Committee.

Today, we launch the annual SafeRoads campaign, a critical initiative aimed at protecting lives by emphasizing the importance of adhering to road safety rules, especially near work zones. The SafeRoads campaign is not just about compliance — it’s about respect and responsibility.

Speed limits are lower in designated construction zones, whether or not workers are present, and the fine for speeding is double the cost of a regular ticket.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, drivers passing by a roadside emergency vehicle must move to the farthest lane from the scene whenever possible, and adhere to reduced speed limits: 40 km/h when the posted speed limit is below 79 km/h, and 60 km/h when the posted speed limit is 80 km/h or higher.

Every time you drive through a construction zone or past an emergency responder at work, you are in a position to either protect or endanger a life. Choose to protect.

Include the above rules in your next toolbox talk with your workers.  Together, let’s respect our workers and ensure that safety is the priority on our roads.
