Asphalt work, particularly in paving and road construction, involves a range of safety concerns due to the materials and processes used. Here are some key safety guidelines and practices to help ensure the well-being of workers:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be worn when working with or near hot asphalt. This includes hard hats, hearing protection, protective eye wear or face shield, thermally insulated gloves, high visibility apparel that covers the body to prevent direct contact burns, fit-tested respirators and steel toe boots.
  • Be aware of the temperature of the asphalt. It can pose fire, explosion and burn risks. Allow asphalt to cool sufficiently before walking on it or allowing vehicles to drive on it. Do no handle asphalt near sparks, flames or other ignition sources.
  • Ensure all workers are trained and competent in the operation and safety protocols for equipment like pavers, rollers and trucks. Use appropriate tools and equipment to handle and spread hot asphalt.
  • Use clear hand signals or radios to communicate when operating or working near heavy equipment.
  • Use proper signage and barricades to alert drivers and pedestrians of roadwork and potential hazards. This may include traffic control measures to keep vehicles away from the work area and protect workers.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation in areas where asphalt fumes are present, particularly in confined or smaller spaces. Eyes can become irritated by the asphalt fumes or particulates.  Ensure adequate eyewash that provides at least 15 minutes of continuous flow is available onsite.
  • Remember those working outdoors need to keep hydrated and protection from heat stress and fume exposure.
  • Ensure appropriate emergency procedures and first aid supplies are readily available on site.

By adhering to these safety guidelines, workers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and health issues associated with asphalt work. For any questions or concerns regarding asphalt safety contact your regional advisor.
