Staying in touch: School zone safety

This week marks the return to school for many of Manitoba’s students. With that comes the return of enforced school zones across the province. School zones have a reduced speed limit as a precaution to protect the youth in the area. It is important to remind ourselves of some safety tips in school zones:

  • Watch for road signs and keep to the limit of 30km/h in school zones.
  • Do not become distracted and stay alert while driving through school zones.
  • Expect increased traffic during pickup and drop off times. Follow the signals of crossing guards when they are aiding students across the road.
  • Watch for all modes of transport — walkers, those on bicycles, skateboards, scooters and in vehicles.
  • If a school bus has its stop sign extended and lights flashing, you must stop your vehicle regardless of the direction you’re coming from. School busses must stop for railway crossings; expect sudden stops in those areas with crossings.

With these tips in mind, we wish for everyone to enjoy a great back to school season. If you have questions or concerns regarding school zone safety, please contact your regional advisor.
