STAYING IN TOUCH: JACQUELYN ODURO
Workplace injuries don’t happen at an even rate through the year. In fact, studies done in the heavy construction field show injuries tend to rise in the late summer and into the fall, as the construction season comes to an end.
We want to remind our industry to take care during this busy season, stressing the importance of safe-work practices to avoid injury.
According to a study done for the Manitoba Workers Compensation Board, the most common work-related injuries during this busy season are sprains and strains. Looking deeper into specific sprain/strain incident reports shows that the back, leg and ankle are injured most frequently. These injuries are commonly caused by slips, trips, lifting, pushing and pulling.
Safety is of paramount importance all year, but it is critical to address hazards during construction’s busiest time. Our weekly Safety Talks include tips on preventing sprain and strain injuries.
